Day 4: San Gimignano (Medieval Fair); Sunday, June 16th
(Theresa)
We were just plain lucky that we ran ourselves right into the "Ferie delle messa", the Medieval Harvest Festival of the People of San Gimignano. It was really awesome!! Mostly because I really didn't get that feeling that we were among hordes of tourists. We almost (not quite) secretly blended in with the locals…Except for the fact that some of us weren't quite sure what to make of the restrooms there. A hole in the ground is all I have to say. We all ate gelato and watched a show called the Fire Eaters in which acrobats played with fire in all sorts of interesting ways. Then we got to dress up in armor and play with swords!! By the way, the pizzeria in Piazza Della Cisterna (right near the well) is the best pizza I've had in Tuscany. We ended the day fairly early and most everyone jumped into the pool to escape the oppressive heat. Yaeli just loved the pool and by the end of the week was swimming without her floats!! Dave and I volunteered to cook dinner, which was pasta (gasp) and caprese (the BEST tomatoes and Mozerella we've ever eaten). This was the night we all discovered the one flaw of Tuscany—the bread! Tuscans don't add salt to their bread. I don't think anyone quite got used to it either.
